whhaaat? whhhhhaaat?! ok!
Why can't you just say it? Why can't you just say 'hey, this product is better because of X. there.' Well, first of all, America regards all of us as dirty rat bastard liars. This is the industry that invented halitosis to sell kitchen cleaner. And then advertising would be easy and everyone or no one (depending on your perspective) would want to do it. But that's what makes it interesting. You have to find a way to connect with people, to draw them in by saying something interesting or painful or scary or mostly importantly, true. Technology changes, but people remain the same. Insecure, irrational, fragile beings. And the point is not to exploit that, but to speak to it. Yes, it could be argue that advertising has created problems in society, an example-the impossible standard of beauty imposed on women. But there is something primal that the thought was born from. Advertising did not invent insecurity, it simply stumbled upon it and used it to its advantage. That's where it's on us as the creators of this communication to be more responsible. To resist being fear mongers and speak to people in the most human way possible without exploiting that humanity. It's not easy, but it's not meant to be.
